President Tinubu Approves Free Nationwide Train Rides from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025

Passengers are excited about President Bola Tinubu's approval of free train rides across the country, which will run from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

The announcement was made on Monday, sparking joy among many passengers who had previously been unable to afford the high transport fares and feared missing out on spending the festive season with their loved ones.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained that the initiative is part of the government's efforts to reduce transportation costs during the holiday period.

“As we did last year, free train services will be available to all Nigerians from December 20 to January 5, nationwide,” he said.

“This is in line with the President’s commitment to alleviate transportation costs, especially for the most vulnerable Nigerians. Recall that similar measures were implemented during last year’s Christmas and Sallah periods, and the President has approved the same for this year.”

Passengers shared their gratitude for the initiative. Yetunde Adeogun, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her excitement, saying, “If not for this announcement, I wouldn’t have been able to travel to my hometown this year.”

Adeogun had initially informed her son that they would not be making the trip, but now, thanks to the President’s gesture, she will be able to visit her parents. “I’m overjoyed that the free rides start on the 20th. I’m deeply grateful to President Tinubu. However, I urge authorities to closely monitor the situation to ensure that no one demands payment for what has been declared free,” she added.

Acknowledging the current economic hardships, Adeogun emphasized that such initiatives bring much-needed relief to Nigerians, adding, “This gesture will bring smiles to many faces.”

Another passenger, Azeezat Aina, also expressed her gratitude, saying, “We are grateful to the government. This came at the perfect time, and I’m thrilled. A big thank you to President Tinubu.”

Mr. Adewale, who lives in Ogun State but works in Lagos, shared his joy as well, saying the initiative would allow him to save on transport costs until January 5. “At least I can save the money I would have spent on transportation to help cover the high cost of chicken for my children on the 25th. Thank you, Mr. President. We really appreciate it.”

This decision is being widely hailed as a thoughtful and timely measure to ease the burden of transportation costs during the holiday season.
