What If the World’s ‘Dictator’ Did More for His People Than Most Democracies
Say what you want about Muammar Gaddafi, but during his time in power, Libya saw some incredible benefits for its people—many of which you won’t find anywhere else in the world. If this kind of leadership gets labeled as a "dictatorship," it really makes you wonder what standard we’re using to define democracy.
Here’s a breakdown of the policies and social support systems Gaddafi implemented during his rule:
1. No Electricity Bills
Electricity was completely free for Libyan citizens. No monthly bills, just power for everyone.
2. Interest-Free Loans
All loans came with zero interest. The banks were state-owned and couldn’t charge interest by law.
3. Housing Was a Basic Right
Gaddafi believed no Libyan should be homeless. He even delayed getting a house for his own parents until every citizen had one. They lived in a tent while he was in power.
4. $50,000 for Newlyweds
Newly married couples received 60,000 Libyan Dinar (about $50,000 USD) to help buy their first home and start their family.
5. Free Education & Healthcare
Both education and medical treatment were free. Literacy rose from 25% before his rule to over 80% during his time.
6. Support for Farmers
If someone wanted to start a farm, the government provided land, a house, equipment, seeds, and livestock—all free of charge.
7. Fully Funded Overseas Studies & Treatments
If someone couldn’t get the education or healthcare they needed within Libya, the government would pay for them to go abroad. They also got $2,300/month for accommodation and a car allowance.
8. 50% Subsidy on Cars
If you bought a car, the government covered half the cost.
9. Ultra-Cheap Gas
Petrol was around $0.14 per liter—virtually unheard of elsewhere.
10. No External Debt
Libya had no foreign debt and had built up $150 billion in reserves (later frozen by international powers after Gaddafi's fall).
11. State-Paid Salaries for Unemployed Graduates
Graduates who couldn’t find a job still received the average salary for their profession until they found employment.
12. Oil Profits Shared
A portion of oil revenue was deposited directly into citizens' bank accounts.
13. $5,000 for New Mothers
Women who gave birth received a $5,000 allowance.
14. Extremely Affordable Bread
40 loaves of bread cost just $0.15.
15. A Highly Educated Population
By the end of Gaddafi’s rule, 25% of Libyans held a university degree.
16. A Water Revolution
He built the world’s largest irrigation project, the Great Man-Made River, which brought fresh water to Libya’s desert regions.
So you say… Dictatorship? It’s easy to toss around labels like “dictator,” but when you take a real look at what Gaddafi did for his people, it challenges the way we define leadership. If this was tyranny, then maybe we need to ask ourselves what true freedom and democracy are supposed to look like.
