Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned Against one-party system in Nigeria
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that forcing Nigeria into a one-party system could choke the country’s political space. "It might also cause confusion and chaos," he says.
He made this warning during a memorial lecture and tribute event in Abuja. The event was held on May 7 to honour the late Chief Edwin Clark, a former Federal Commissioner for Information and a leader from the South-South region.
Jonathan noted that a one-party system can work in some countries. He gave the example of Tanzania under Julius Nyerere. There, it helped unite a country with many ethnic groups. But he explained that it was achieved through careful, inclusive steps. It was not forced or manipulated for political gain. If Nigeria were to try this, he said it must be done properly, without coercion or scheming.
His comments come as many politicians from opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) switch over to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Jonathan also spoke about Clark, calling him a father figure. He said no one can take his place. He praised Clark for his sharp memory, courage, and strength in standing up for what he believed was right.
