Nigeria's Security Crisis: The Oyo State Kidnapping and the Nation's Collapsing Defense

Terrorists used a helicopter to fly kidnapped school children from Oyo State to Kaduna. This is not a movie but reality. It is the current reality in Nigeria as of June 2026. When gunmen can move victims across state lines by air without being noticed or without the chief security officer aware of it, I think the government has lost control of the these people.

This incident shows a total breakdown of the security system of Nigeria. Students and teachers were snatched from their school, and the response from the top officials has been should I say silent or what! This is confusing. We are seeing a pattern where citizens are left helplessly while the people who were elected to protect them look the other way.

This post looks at the facts of the Oyo State attack. I will talk about why the military failed and why some believe the government is actually helping the terrorists. It is time to stop pretending things are fine.

The Oyo State Kidnapping: A Deep Dive into the Incident

The attack on the Oyo State school was one of the deadliest  action of the terrorist in recent time. Islamic extremists stormed the school compound and took students and teachers captive. At first, the kidnappers demanded the implementation of Sharia law in the state as the condition to release their victims. Later, they claimed they never made those demands, that they only need money as ransom. While the governor was thinking of how to resçure the victims

The information reaching me now, according to the viral video on YouTube is that the victims were moved from Oyo to Kaduna state. According to the video,Some were taken by road, but others were lifted by helicopter to Kaduna State. This means the terrorists have access to aircraft. They can fly over forests and cities without anyone stopping them.

Recently, there have been reports of mediation team led by the chief security officer Mr Nuhu Ribadu, to have traveled to Oyo states to negotiate their release. However, they did not returned with clear answers. The families are left in the dark while the kidnappers hold all the cards.

Systemic Failures in Nigeria's Defense and Security

How does a Defense Chief allow terrorists to fly helicopters in a country at this time that Nigeria is facing security threat? At least, the Minister of Defense should know every aircraft in the air. Yet, these kidnappers moved people across states without a single interception. It makes you wonder if the government do not know about all the insecurities going on in the country .

The security failure goes deeper than just the air force. At some point, when the military tried to confront the terrorists, they failed because it seems that before they plan and executes any action, the terrorist already know their moves. There are strong beliefs that insiders are the ones telling the gunmen all the moves of the Nigeria military. In the case of Oyo kidnap, when the military  went to rescue the kidnapped victims, the terrorist knew the soldiers were coming and struck first, wasting military a personnel in the process.

But when the local vigilantes went, it was a different experience. They fought the terrorists for nearly an hour. They did not have insider tell them that they were coming, so they actually reached the enemy. They failed to rescue the victims only because they were outgunned. They used pump-action guns against continuous, superior firepower.

The Broader Context: Terrorism and Governance in Nigeria

Many people now believe the government is colluding with the terrorists. It is hard to believe this is just "bad luck" or "lack of resources". In some instances, the villagers would call the soldiers to come and defend them, they were told the military would not come because the government had an agreement with the attackers.

I think that there is a clear push for the Islamization of Nigeria. The extremists want to turn the whole country into a Sharia state. This is not just happening in the villages or towns. Some people in the House of Representatives have tried to amend laws to remove personal terms and push Sharia further.

We have seen this happen before in places like Kwara State. Traditional kings were killed or pushed out. The terrorists installed their own leaders and took over. I think that is the blueprint for what they want for the rest of the country.

The Erosion of Trust and the Future of Nigeria

Nigeria has not gotten better since 2007. From Yar'Adua to Jonathan, Buhari, and now Tinubu, the trend is the same. Security gets worse every year. The "democracy" we talk about feels like a lie when people are beheaded and kidnapped in broad daylight.

Fear is the only thing that grows. We see it in Ekiti State and Plateau State. In one instance, a man in Ezeko had to bury 18 people in a single day.

The system is broken. Whether it is bombs in Zamfara States or kidnappings in Oyo State, the result is the same. The people in charge seem to sleep soundly while the population is hunted.

Citizen Empowerment: The Controversial Call for Arms

If the government will not protect you, who should protect yourself. This has led to a desperate call for citizens to arm themselves. The logic is simple: terrorists only attack those who cannot fight back. If a village of 2,000 people had 500 armed citizens, the gunmen would think twice.

Senator Ned iwoko once brought a bill to allow citizens to own arms. I think that should be  the practical solution to this deadly problem. If people of sound mind could pass a test and get a license, the power balance would shift. But the government blocks these moves.

The people who control the licenses are the same people who allow terrorists to fly helicopters. They want the citizens weak and the terrorists strong. So that the Citizens would be scared and easy to control.

Final Thoughts

Nigeria is at a crossroads. When terrorists move victims by air and the government stays silent, the state has failed. We are not just facing a few criminals; we are facing a system that is run by or for terrorists.

The current path leads to more death and more lost of children. We cannot keep voting for the same types of leaders and expecting a different result. The only way out is for people to wake up and demand real security or find ways to protect themselves.

Please share this information. The more people who know that terrorists are using aircraft to move kidnapped children, the harder it is for the government to lie about it. Awareness is the first step toward survival.
