Recently, a video circulated online showing Nigerian police officers seemingly being treated disrespectfully by foreign Chinese nationals, akin to beggars. Another video depicted an officer, presumably on duty, cleaning a politician's shoes, raising questions about their professional responsibilities. These incidents, widely shared online, continue to cast the Nigerian Police Force in a negative light. The frequent use of Nigerian police officers in comedic skits is becoming frustrating.
I believe the authorities should investigate this matter. While every profession has a code of conduct, the actions observed thus far suggest that the Nigerian Police Force may not be adhering to such standards. For instance, one might question if police officers in neighboring Ghana would behave similarly. This observation is not intended as an insult to the Nigerian Police Force, but rather a call for urgent attention to these trends.
Furthermore, a lack of proper identification by officers, as sometimes depicted in these videos, can lead to distrust. When officers do not present their names or identification cards, it creates an environment where individuals might be rude or suspicious. This lack of professionalism could even enable imposters to pose as officers and commit crimes. While I am not attempting to dictate their operational procedures, it seems logical that officers should identify themselves upon entering a new environment, especially when interacting with unfamiliar individuals.
