Abuja — President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian citizens not to lose hope, declaring that the “dark days of sacrifice are almost over” as the country prepares to mark its 66th Independence Day anniversary on October 1, 2026.
The message was delivered on Friday by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who represented the President at the Independence Day Jumat prayer held at the National Mosque in Abuja.
Addressing worshippers, Abbas said that while Nigeria is “yet to be where it should be,” the nation is firmly on the path to greatness. He noted that the 66th anniversary signifies that the country has come of age and matured, despite past challenges and missed opportunities.
“My message to the country on behalf of Mr President is that people should not lose hope. Peace is coming back to this country. Development is coming back to this country. Things will get better as we progress in this democracy,” Abbas stated.
He emphasized that the current administration is correcting the cumulative mistakes and missed opportunities of previous years, and urged citizens to support ongoing reforms aimed at putting the nation on a steady course toward progress.
Abbas further appealed to Nigerians to give President Tinubu the opportunity to complete the work he has started, asserting that the people “have finished making sacrifices for this country to be great again.”
The prayer service was attended by several high-ranking officials and traditional rulers, including Deputy President of the Senate Barau Jibrin, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, and the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, among others.
The remarks come as the Federal Government prepares for a low-key celebration of the independence anniversary next week.
