Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has described President Bola Tinubu as “a man of courage” for removing Nigeria’s fuel subsidy, arguing that previous leaders avoided the decision out of fear it could cost them political power.
In remarks shared widely on social media, Okpebholo said former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan “were afraid to remove it because they feared it might cost them their positions.” He added that once Tinubu’s reforms take full effect, “Nigeria will be strong like America and the UK.”
The statements were circulated in a video post by X user @ChuksEricE on 9 October 2026. The post quickly attracted a lot of comments that were largely critical of both the governor’s assessment and the broader economic impact of the subsidy removal.
Some of the reactions are as below:
- @Edvinng wrote: “Anything way strong pass this current situation na d!e. Make Tinubu no reform again, make he shift. He don try.”
- @JVeebrand commented: “This Monday D7 didn't get the MEMO😂😂😂😂 When Taiwo Is Bringing Back A Manufactured ‘Subsidy Discount’, Monday D7 Is Praising Tinubu For Removing It.😂😂 Let The Confusion Propaganda Begin 😁🥳”
- @anifowoseabi simply replied: “Saying rubbish.”
- @iaojimaahmedmus observed: “Edo people dey get sense but this one I shock.”
- @IGBO1020413 stated: “He paid 11 trillion for pipeline security in three years, will buhari paid 11.7 trillion for subsidy, tinubu is the liar.”
Other users labelled the remarks as “mad man,” and questioned the governor’s understanding of reforms, while some dismissed the comparison with the United States and the United Kingdom.
