Controversial hip-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola, better known as Portable, avoided a three-month jail term after paying a N30,000 fine set by the court.
Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo, who led the hearing at the court in Ifo, Ogun State, sentenced Portable to three months in prison or a N30,000 fine. The ruling came on Tuesday.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Olumide Awoleke, told the court that Okikiola committed the offences on November 18, 2022, around 11:00 in the morning. The incident took place in Okeosa, Ilogbo, within Ifo Local Government.
The charge sheet outlined the offences. It said, “That you, Badmus Habeeb Okikiola, also called Portable, and others who have not been caught, conspired to commit a crime, namely assault, on November 18, 2022, at 11:00 in Okeosa, Ilogbo, in the Ifo district. This was a violation of Section 517 of Ogun State's Criminal Code Laws, 2006.
The sheet also accused him of unlawfully attacking someone named Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi by beating him all over his body. This was against Section 351 of the same law.
Additionally, it claimed Portable stole some musical equipment, including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a complete studio connection cable, and an AKG P420 microphone, in 2022. These thefts broke sections 383, 384, and 390 of the criminal law.
In the verdict, Chief Magistrate Ilo found Portable guilty of the first two charges.
He sentenced Portable to one month in prison or a N10,000 fine for the first count, and two months or a N20,000 fine for the second.
This case is not new. Portable was previously arraigned in April 2023 on charges related to assault and stealing musical gear.
He was granted bail of N300,000 with two sureties from his family members. But he didn’t show up in court for some time after that.
He was then kept at the state’s correctional facility. Last Thursday, he was brought back to court, and the judge gave his ruling on Tuesday.
