The Scent of Excess: Are We Drowning in Consumerism?

Solomon Buchi on Consumerism and Luxury in Nigeria

Nigerian writer and life coach, Solomon Buchi, has recently stirred up a lively debate about consumerism, particularly in response to the buzz surrounding comedian Mr Macaroni's viral perfume collection video.

Buchi weighed in on the popular "God when?" comments that flooded Macaroni's post. In a now-widespread clip, he cautioned against a growing trend of celebrating extreme luxury, suggesting it promotes an unhealthy form of materialism.

"This isn't cute… We're actually fuelling a culture of unrealistic materialism," he stated, adding pointedly, "Nobody needs 40 perfumes, 40 trainers, or 40 pairs of shoes — nobody."

While careful not to directly criticise specific celebrities, Buchi highlighted the significant impact such content can have on younger audiences. He argued that it often leads them to unfavourably compare their own lives to the often exaggerated lifestyles portrayed online.

"You're not skint — you just don't need what you're desperate to buy," he observed, concluding with a stark warning: "Consumerism is becoming the god of our era, and it's slowly but surely destroying us."

Buchi's message was a clear call to action, urging viewers to reconsider what truly holds value. He served as a timely reminder that one's worth isn't, and shouldn't be, measured by the accumulation of possessions. "You don't need it. You're doing well," he reassured his audience.
