On August 14, 2025, Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, departed Abuja for a pivotal two-country tour—first to Japan, then onward to Brazil—underscoring Abuja's renewed focus on expanding global economic alliances.
Japan Visit: TICAD9 and Strategic Engagements
The President is scheduled to arrive in Yokohama to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) from August 20 to 22. Under the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” the conference aims to enhance economic transformation across the continent by strengthening the business environment, catalyzing private investment, and fostering resilience rooted in peace and human security.
During the conference, President Tinubu is expected to attend high-level plenary sessions, engage in bilateral discussions, and hold talks with senior executives from Japanese companies with established interests in Nigeria. The stopover will also include a brief layover in Dubai—a logistical bridge to the first major leg of the trip.
Brazil Visit: State-Level Talks and Business Forum
Shortly after concluding his engagements in Japan, the President will travel to Brasília on August 24 for a two-day state visit, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Nigeria’s delegation—which includes several key ministers and senior officials—will use the visit to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation. Highlighted activities include:
-
A formal bilateral meeting with President Lula da Silva.
-
Participation in a business forum crafted to link Nigerian interests with Brazilian investors.
-
Discussions aimed at sealing agreements or Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) targeting the expansion of economic, trade, and diplomatic ties.
This diplomatic outreach signals a strategic push by Nigeria to deepen links with two of the world’s largest economies—leveraging multilateral forums and high-profile visits to attract investment, drive innovation, and bolster international partnerships.
