The Islamic State has just dropped what it’s calling “proof” of its latest operation, and the footage is already making waves in social media and security circles. In a newly released video, the group claims to show its fighters storming the 101 Airbase of the Nigerien Air Force — and if the images are to be believed, the scene is grim.
According to the video, dozens of IS–Sahel militants roll in on motorcycles, swarming the base. Military aircraft can be seen damaged or destroyed, with smoke rising, guns shooting sporadically, and chaos unfolding across the airfield. What’s raising eyebrows and plenty of uncomfortable questions is the apparent lack of resistance. No visible Nigerien soldiers, no organized counterattack, just militants moving through the base with alarming ease.
As usual, the group is clearly trying to control the narrative, presenting the raid as swift, dominant, and uncontested. Analysts are already warning that these videos are carefully edited propaganda tools, designed to exaggerate success and project power. Still, even allowing for manipulation, the implications are hard to ignore. An airbase breach of this scale suggests serious security gaps — or at the very least, a moment of vulnerability that IS–Sahel is eager to exploit.
For Niger, which has been battling insurgent violence for years, the footage is an uncomfortable reminder of how volatile the region remains. And for observers watching from afar, the video raises the same lingering question everyone’s thinking but no one wants to ask out loud: how did it get this far, this fast?
Expect more scrutiny, more official statements, and likely a very different version of events from authorities in the days ahead. Until then, the video is doing exactly what it was meant to do — dominate the conversation and send a chilling message.
