A food trader at Ekiosa Market in Benin City, Edo State, has been arrested after allegedly mixing beans with Sniper, a dichlorvos-based insecticide, intended for sale to customers.
According to a report shared by Nigeria Stories on Friday, the trader was apprehended following the discovery of the practice, which poses serious health risks to consumers. Video footage circulating online shows a bottle of Sniper, piles of beans, and scenes from the market where authorities and a crowd gathered during the arrest. A man in a reflective vest is seen speaking to journalists at the scene.
Sniper is a chemical primarily intended for professional pest control and is not approved for use on food items meant for human consumption. Public health experts have long warned against the dangerous practice of using such pesticides to preserve or treat grains and legumes, as residues can cause severe poisoning.
The incident has drawn attention on social media, with many expressing concern over food safety standards in open markets. Authorities have not yet released further official details on the investigation or the trader’s identity.
