Social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has publicly criticised Pastor Osayi Arome after the cleric suggested that while China focuses on manufacturing engines and advancing technology, Nigeria’s national calling is spiritual revival rather than technological development.
In a video reaction that has circulated widely on social media platforms, including a post shared by the account @NigeriaStories on Sunday, VeryDarkMan argued that such messaging contributes to Nigeria’s underdevelopment. He contended that excessive emphasis on prayer and religious activities has discouraged innovation and practical problem-solving among citizens.
“It is this kind of preaching that put Nigeria where it is today. The church and the mosque have contributed to why we are still laid back as a nation. The people that are meant to be innovative and creative are praying every day for a miracle,” VeryDarkMan said in the video.
The activist further stated that people in more technologically advanced nations possess the same intellectual capacity as Nigerians, but channel it differently. “These nations that we look up to have the same brain like us. But instead of us to use our own brains, we’ll go to church,” he remarked.
Addressing Pastor Arome directly, VeryDarkMan questioned the idea that Nigeria should prioritise revival over technology and innovation. He accused the pastor of using such teachings to encourage followers to focus on religious contributions rather than productive endeavours, and defended Nigerians who travel abroad to learn from and showcase technological advancements, including efforts involving China.
The remarks have sparked debate online, with some users agreeing that an over-reliance on religion has hindered national progress, while others defend the role of faith in Nigerian society. As of the latest reports, there has been no public response from Pastor Osayi Arome.
