Lagos, Nigeria — Economist and financial affairs activist Dr. Boniface Chizea has strongly defended former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi amid renewed questions over the state’s finances during his administration, describing the latest allegations as politically motivated.
Appearing on ARISE News’ The Morning Show on Sunday, Chizea said Obi “is a threat to those in power,” and that “anything to discredit him is on the table.” He dismissed recent claims about loans taken during Obi’s tenure, noting that such allegations had not surfaced in the twelve years since Obi left office in 2014.
“We have not heard these loan claims before. Twelve years down the road, they are only coming up now,” Chizea stated. He emphasized that Charles Soludo did not succeed Obi as governor and argued the current debate is driven by politics rather than historical fact.
Chizea highlighted Obi’s record, saying the former governor left office with substantial balances in both dollars and naira, declined to collect a pension, and rejected land offered to him by the state. “I challenge anyone to find another person with such a record,” he said.
The discussion, framed around “Obi’s Anambra Debt Row: Fact, Fiction & 2027 Campaign,” comes as Nigeria’s political landscape intensifies ahead of the next general elections. Supporters of Obi have echoed Chizea’s view online, calling the claims an attempt to undermine the former Labour Party presidential candidate’s reputation.
No immediate response from Governor Soludo or other state officials was included in the broadcast.
