The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of 10 victims abducted by gunmen along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving security agencies.

According to a report published by the Nigerian news account Instablog9ja on X (formerly Twitter), Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye stated that the rescued victims are safe and receiving attention. The exact number of people abducted remains under verification.

The incident took place around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, near Umunoha. Two buses carrying National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other passengers travelling from Ibadan to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State and Bende in Abia State came under attack. Earlier reports had indicated that about 20 corps members heading to orientation camps in the South-East and South-South were abducted.

Tactical teams are continuing intelligence-led operations to locate the suspected kidnappers and free any remaining victims. Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso, together with other service commanders, visited the scene to assess the situation and direct ongoing efforts. He assured the public that operations would continue until all victims are recovered and the suspects arrested.

The affected section of the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway has since been reopened, with security personnel deployed to protect commuters. Police are also coordinating with the NYSC to contact the families of the affected corps members. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and vigilant while providing any credible information that could assist the investigation.
