No fewer than 49 villagers have been confirmed dead following coordinated bandit attacks across parts of northern Nigeria, in what authorities describe as one of the latest waves of violence targeting rural communities.
The attacks, which occurred in Kebbi State and Kwara State, left dozens of families in mourning, while security forces also neutralised 10 suspected bandits during a separate military operation in Plateau State.
In Kebbi, the worst-hit area, at least 44 people were killed after gunmen launched simultaneous assaults on several villages in Shanga Local Government Area. The affected communities—including Gebe, Kalkami, Kawara, Kasoshi, Awaye, Tungar Rini, Binuwa, and Dabe—were reportedly attacked at the same time, amplifying the scale of destruction.
Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Command said security operatives had responded and initiated a large-scale clearance operation across the state to restore order and track down the perpetrators. The operation followed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, with reinforcements deployed to affected communities.
Authorities noted that calm has gradually returned to the affected areas, while investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the attacks and prevent further incidents.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, troops engaged suspected terrorists in Plateau State, killing 10 during a military operation aimed at dismantling armed groups operating in the region.
The fresh incidents underscore growing concerns over insecurity in rural communities, where residents continue to face repeated attacks by armed groups, leading to loss of lives, displacement, and destruction of property
