Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a passionate appeal for peace amid reports of hostilities between the communities of Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Obi said he was “deeply pained” by the ongoing conflict. “Hostilities of the kind we are witnessing between the two communities achieve nothing but destruction,” he wrote. “At a time when people are already finding it increasingly difficult to survive, adding the devastation of conflict is like adding fuel to the fire.”

Obi urged both sides to “immediately cease hostilities and embrace peace,” stressing that no grievance is worth the loss of lives, destruction of homes and livelihoods, or the pain inflicted on families. He called for dialogue over violence, reconciliation over revenge, and peace over destruction.

“May God grant wisdom to our leaders and peace to Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri,” he added. “Nigeria will be OK.”

The appeal comes as reports of clashes between the neighbouring communities continue to circulate. Obi, a native of Anambra State, framed his intervention as a call for restraint and peaceful resolution at a time of broader economic hardship.
