Awka, Anambra State — October 2, 2026
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday praised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its performance in combating economic and financial crimes, declaring that the agency has justified the confidence reposed in it.
The President made the remarks during the commissioning of a new Zonal Directorate of the EFCC in Awka, Anambra State. He was represented at the event by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.
Tinubu noted that supporting the EFCC has not been particularly difficult because of the agency’s consistent results. “The evidential proof of the EFCC’s success speaks loudly in convictions secured, assets and properties recovered,” he said.
He linked the Commission’s work to two key pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda: reforming the economy for sustained and inclusive growth, and the promotion of good governance. The anti-graft agency, he added, complements these goals through its focus on accountability, transparency, and the proper deployment of resources.
EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede restated the Commission’s commitment to both enforcement and prevention. He said the new Directorate would not only enforce the law professionally and courageously but would also prioritise corruption prevention by engaging government institutions, businesses, financial institutions, professional bodies, schools, markets, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, religious bodies, and communities.
Olukoyede disclosed that between October 2023 and July 2026, the EFCC received 49,673 petitions, investigated 39,615 cases, filed 14,476 cases in court, and secured 10,872 convictions, achieving a conviction-to-filing ratio of 75.1 percent. In the first half of 2026 alone, the Commission recorded 1,370 convictions from 1,889 filings.
He also reported recoveries totaling ₦1,233,612,040,411.11, $684,478,457.32, £373,905.78, and €9,343,803.66, in addition to recoveries in other currencies.
The Chairman highlighted institutional reforms implemented during the period, including new guidelines on arrest and bail, a review of sting operations, and the establishment of the Department of Fraud Risk Assessment and Control, the Security Department, the Immigration and Visa Section, and the Cybercrime Rapid Response Centre.
Olukoyede assured Nigerians that the EFCC would not relent in the pursuit of its mandate.
