Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has acknowledged Nigeria’s attacking threat ahead of Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Marrakech, while expressing confidence in his team’s chances. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the winger joked that he was “afraid” of the Super Eagles’ forwards before stressing it would be decided on the pitch.

Nigeria are the tournament’s top scorers with 12 goals in four matches, led by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams. Algeria, however, have built their campaign on defensive strength, conceding just once en route to the last eight.

Mahrez, 34, confirmed the tournament will be his final AFCON, adding motivation to his bid for a second continental title. A key figure in Algeria’s 2019 triumph, he has scored three goals in the current competition as the Desert Warriors reached the quarter-finals with a perfect record, matching Nigeria’s run.
